CAN THE EFFECTS OF A BRIEF ALCOHOL INTERVENTION REALLY LAST NINE YEARS?
A unique study from Norway discerned lasting benefits from a brief alcohol intervention nine years
after risky drinkers had been identified during mass screening for heart disease and other medical
risk factors.

BEST NOT TO TELL INCENDIARY PATIENTS WHAT TO DO
One of the few 'matches' found by a multi-clinic US alcohol treatment trial was that motivational
therapy worked well with clients prone to anger. Later one of the clinics found out why: it wasn't
inherent in the therapy, but because therapists refrained from being directive.

FIRST STEP IN CUTTING HEPATITIS C RISK - ASSESS THE RISK!
In Australia a detailed assessment of an injector's risk of becoming infected with hepatitis C was
followed by substantial risk reductions not improved on by individualised advice.

HARM REDUCTION GOALS IMPROVED OUTCOMES FROM US SCHOOL PROGRAMME
Rare for an early adolescence school programme to aim for harm reduction, very rare in the USA. In
the face of patchy outcomes, Project ALERT re-focused on reducing harm, and found the intended
improvements in smoking and drinking risk reductions.
