Also in SPM8 there is a function, spm_rmpath, which will remove all
path references to spm. This is useful when trying to run different
versions of spm, in order to make sure that the path is clean before
starting a different version. You can probably put a copy of this
function in your general matlab path so that you can use it whether
you have run spm2 or spm8.
