Research Associate in extragalactic infrared astronomy and cosmology

Salary: GDP 26,580 - 38,730 per annum
Fixed term: 2 years in the first instance, commencing 1 October 2009
Applications are invited for a two-year Research Associate position in
the Astrophysics Group, to start on 1 October 2009. The post will be
in the broad area of extragalactic infrared astronomy and cosmology to
participate in the Group's programme of far infrared and submillimetre
surveys, their multi-wavelength follow-up, and studies of galaxy
formation and the star formation history of the universe, with a
strong role in Herschel-SPIRE and PLANCK-HFI extragalactic surveys,
working closely with Dr David Clements and Prof Michael Rowan-Robinson.
This work will include reduction and analysis of data from the
Herschel satellite, proposing and obtaining relevant follow-up and
other observations pertinent to our research goals, and the
presentation of the scientific results obtained. The postholder will
be expected to contribute to the Department's teaching activities up
to approximately half a day per week during the academic year, as
appropriate.
A PhD or equivalent level of professional qualifications and
experience in Astrophysics or a related discipline, and a strong
research background in extragalactic astronomy is essential.
Experience in one or more of the following areas is very desirable:
far infrared or submillimetre astronomy, extragalactic survey followup
observations, knowledge and experience of data reduction methods and
procedures for current astronomical facilities.
