SESSION 1: HOW THE FORCES OF GLOBAL CAPITAL HAVE BEEN SHAPING  
PEOPLE’S LIVES AND LIVELIHOODS
Paul Mason and Doreen Massey
DOREEN MASSEY is a founding editor of Soundings. She is professor of  
geography at the Open University and author of many books, including  
WORLD CITY (Polity 2007) and FOR SPACE, Sage 2005.
PAUL MASON is a well-known journalist and broadcaster. He is author  
of MELTDOWN: THE END OF THE AGE OF GREED (Verso 2009) and LIVE  
WORKING OR DIE FIGHTING (Harvill Secker 2007).
SESSION 2: CULTURE AND BELONGING IN AN INSECURE WORLD
Lynsey Hanley, Ben Rogaly, Becky Taylor

LYNSEY HANLEY grew up in the 1980s on what was then the largest  
council estate in Europe, on the outskirts of Birmingham. Her book  
ESTATES: AN INTIMATE HISTORY was published by Granta Books in 2006.  
She has written widely on class and culture.

BEN ROGALY is Senior Lecturer in Human Geography at Sussex  
University. He has written extensively on labour migration,  
especially in agriculture. He is co-author, with Becky Taylor, of  
MOVING HISTORIES OF CLASS AND COMMUNITY: IDENTITY, PLACE AND  
BELONGING IN CONTEMPORARY ENGLAND (Palgrave, 2009).

BECKY TAYLOR is visiting research fellow at Sussex University. As  
well as co-authoring the book with Ben, she is author of A MINORITY  
AND THE STATE: TRAVELLERS IN BRITAIN IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY  
(Manchester University Press 2008).

WORKSHOP 1: THE BNP AND THE BREAK-UP OF LABOURISM
Andrew Pearmain

ANDREW PEARMAIN is an associate tutor in History at the University of  
East Anglia, and a manager/consultant in the social care of people  
with HIV/AIDS. He has been a councillor for both the Labour Party and  
Green Party and is a co-editor of FEELBAD BRITAIN: HOW TO MAKE IT  
BETTER (Lawrence & Wishart 2009).

WORKSHOP 2: GANGS, TERRITORY AND CLASS, EJOS UBIRIBO

EJOS UBIRIBO has written movingly of the death of her brother, who  
was the victim of a shooting. She is a member of the Operation  
Trident Advisory Group. Her article on gun crime was published in  
Soundings and in the Soundings book RACE IDENTITY AND BELONGING,  
published by L&W in 2008.

FINAL SESSION: POLITICAL AND POLICY ENGAGEMENT FOR A NEW SOCIALISM
Mike Kenny, Leanne Wood

MICHAEL KENNY is Professor of Politics at Sheffield University and a  
Visiting Research Fellow at the Institute for Public Policy Research.  
He is author of THE FIRST NEW LEFT and THE POLITICS OF IDENTITY, and  
joint editor of RETHINKING BRITISH DECLINE AND POLITICAL IDEOLOGIES.

LEANNE WOOD has been a Plaid Cymru member of the National Assembly  
for Wales since 2003, and is the party’s spokesperson for the  
Environment and Sustainability. She formerly worked as a probation  
officer, a Women’s Aid support worker and as a university lecturer.
