Abolition of the Trento Superintendency for Archaeological Property
On 26 January 2009 the Autonomous Province of the Trento abolished its
Soprintendenza per i beni archeologici amalgamating it with the
Soprintendenza per i beni archivistici e librari and creating a
Soprintendenza per i beni librari e archeologici (Superintendency for
libraries and archaeological property). No rational reasons or
justifications were given for the abolition and no changes were made to
the Superintendencies for Architectural and Artistic Property
In the transfer to the new body, a number of substantial competencies
and responsibilities have been omitted despite their being provided for
by precise legal and administrative dispositions, at both national and
provincial levels, such as the enhancement of the archaeological
heritage of the Trentino, and the Provincial Archaeological Museum and
its branches.
There is no precedent for such a step elsewhere in Italy; the
protection, conservation and enhancement of the archaeological heritage
is a competency that was transferred from the Italian state to the
Autonomous Province of Trento in 1973.
The abolition of the Archaeological Superintendency is a first step on
the road that leads to the privatisation of cultural property, to an
emphasis on events, to the protection and enhancement only of 'rich'
properties believed to be more important because they can be immediately
'spent'.
We therefore ask you to sign our appeal (attached) to the President of
the Autonomous Province of Trento and the Executive Committee to review
the decision taken on 26 January 2009, and restore the Soprintendenza
per i beni archeologici so that it may continue its activities of
safeguarding, conserving and enhancing the archaeological heritage of
Trentino.
