Dear All,
This is for those of you who belong to the Royal Astronomical Society,
or who are about to join (see http://www.ras.org.uk to join).
The British Geophysical Association is promoting the candidacy of
Prof. John Woodhouse (Oxford University) for the Council of the Royal
Astronomical Society (RAS), which at present lacks a Solid Earth Geophysics
representative. Prof. Woodhouse is an eminent seismologist - see
http://www.earth.ox.ac.uk/people/profiles/academic/john and
http://www.earth.ox.ac.uk/research/seismology .
The RAS publishes "Geophysical Journal International",
one of the world's most prominent solid-Earth-geophysics journals,
and has historically supported solid Earth geophysics and
the British Geophysical Association (BGA), and it proposes to continue
doing so by granting the BGA special status as a Committee of the
RAS. Consequently it is very important for the BGA and the
whole community that solid Earth Geophysics be represented at Council level.
The deadline for electronic voting is 12 NOON on THURSDAY 7TH MAY 2009.
If you have received an email from the RAS secretary with a link to
the voting webpage, then you will find this the most expeditious way to
cast your vote. Otherwise you can cast a postal vote on the papers
sent last month (the deadline for receipt of these is 12 noon on Friday 8th
May).
Please draw John's candidacy to the attention of any colleagues
and particularly any student members of the RAS, and encourage them
to use their vote. It is very important that we make
a good turnout at the Council elections to ensure that he is elected.
Regards,
Sheila Peacock
British Geophysical Association
