Is 'The Shining' a family melodrama?
Is 'Dreamcatcher' an updated 1950s B-movie?
Many fascinating questions like these are raised and explored in this
original discussion of films based on the novels by international
bestselling author Stephen King.
The book will be of great interest to both King fans and film fanatics
alike, revealing fresh perspectives through its genre-based analysis and
academic approach, which is critically rigorous but also highly readable.
Browning examines films made by renowned directors such as Stanley Kubrick,
David Cronenberg and George A. Romero. The author questions why only a
handful of the adaptations are considered successful, which he achieves by
exploring each film in isolation and in relation to film genres, rather than
simply investigating their fidelity to the source text.
Although often associated with the macabre, the author argues that King’s
stories form the basis for dozens of narratives outside of the horror genre,
so his investigation is broad in scope and considers the King oeuvre as a
whole. In fact, this is the first book to analyze in detail 'Sleepwalkers'
(1992), 'Dreamcatcher' (2003) and '1408' (2007), as well as the
much-neglected portmanteau films 'Creepshow I' and 'II', (1982, 1987),
'Cat’s Eye' (1984) and 'Tales from the Darkside' (1990) while also offering
fresh approaches to more popular work such as 'The Shining', 'Stand By Me'
and 'The Shawshank Redemption'.
