The Centre for the Development and Evaluation of Complex Interventions for Public Health Improvement
(DECIPHer) is one of five new UKCRC Public Health Research Centres of Excellence. DECIPHer will
bring together leading experts from a range of disciplines to tackle public health issues such as
diet and nutrition, physical activity; and alcohol, tobacco and drugs, with a particular focus on
developing and evaluating multi-level interventions that will have an impact on the health and
well-being of children and young people. The Centre will engage strongly with policy, practice and
public user communities to translate the research results into practical outcomes. The Centre will
be led by Cardiff University in a strategic partnership with the University of Bristol and Swansea
University.
The UKCRC Public Health Research Centre of Excellence (DECIPHer) is a strategic partnership of
Cardiff, Bristol and Swansea Universities. It has been funded to Develop and Evaluate Complex
Interventions for Public Health Improvement, with an initial focus on children and young people.

Senior Research Fellow

The two major foci for the Department of Primary Care and Public Health within DECIPHer will be (i)
developing and evaluating interventions that have a communication focus, and (ii) statistical
modelling. The post will particularly suit excellent candidates with a strong background in either
of these fields, or any other field which is highly relevant to the contribution of the Department
of Primary Care and Public Health to the work of DECIPHer. The aim of this key position is to
develop and lead at least one strategic programme of research within DECIPHer.
You will play a major role in integrating DECIPHer with the Department of Primary Care and Public
Health and undertake internationally competitive research leading to publications in high quality
international journals.
Working collaboratively, you will be expected to secure significant external funding and establish a
research team with an international research profile. You will also make a manageable contribution
towards the delivery of the Department’s teaching programme where appropriate, and contribute to the
strategic aims and ambitions of the Department and DECIPHer.
This post will be based in the Department of Primary Care and Public Health in the School of
Medicine at Cardiff University.
This post is fixed-term until 31 December 2013.
Salary: £44930 – £52086 per annum.

The aim of this new position is to develop and lead a programme of research in primary prevention of
cancer with particular reference to the development and evaluation of interventions to improve
health behaviours associated with cancer, such as smoking, alcohol consumption and diet. You will
work in collaboration with colleagues in the new UKCRC Public Health Research Centre of Excellence,
DECIPHer, and the Cardiff CR-UK Cancer Research Centre.
Working collaboratively, you will be expected to secure significant external funding and est
ablish a
research team with an international research profileYou will provide leadership in developing a research programme, through interdisciplinary
collaboration with colleagues in DECIPHer and the CR-UK Cancer Research Centre and contribute to
developing further existing related research in DECIPHer. You will also pursue collaborative /
interdisciplinary internationally recognised research of high quality and publish the results of
this research in high quality journals. In addition, you will seek and secure significant external
funding to support the developing research programme and attend DECIPHer and CR-UK Centre meetings
and facilitate wider links and collaboration between the Centres, as well as contributing towards
the strategic aims and ambitions of both Centres.
