Subject: UK restrictions on travel by academics and artists?
CBC Radio 'As it happens' had a piece last night in which I learnt,
for the first time, about new (Feb 2009?) UK restrictions on travel by
artists and academics. I've not been able to find much information
about it, but according to the CBC, any non-EU national academic or
artist who is invited to the UK cannot enter unless the host completes
a visa application, which includes information on the guest (including
retinal scan, copies of passports etc.) and guarantees of financial
support. Failure to complete this onerous red-tape can cause
significant complications on entry, and in the future. In the CBC
case, the performer Allison Crowe and her band were detained at
Gatwick for several hours and then deported due to a failure of the
hosting jazz club to complete the paperwork. This has raised the ire
of a number of artists, for obvious reasons, but I've not heard
anything about academics who've been affected. Does anyone know
anything about this?
As an aside, it is interesting that artists and academics are in the
same administrative category!
