Dear Zooarch,
I would like to propose a poster session on visualization of
archaeozoological data at ICAZ and am interested in hearing from
members interested in presenting a poster.
Title:
Visualization of Archaeozoological Data: Elements, Surfaces, Regions,
Continents
Abstract:
Visual representations of archaeozoological data (e.g., maps, figures)
are a fundamental medium for disciplinary and interdisciplinary
communication but are rarely the subject of discourse and scrutiny.
The conventional focus on site-specific analyses and the complexity of
spatially representing data from multiple assemblage types has further
inhibited exploration of relational patterning. However, the ever
increasing number of examined archaeozoological assemblages and the
proliferation of GIS-based visualization programs offers expanded
potential for evaluating and reconciling relational patterning at a
multiple spatial scales (e.g., surfaces, regions, continents). This
poster session seeks to bring together international participants to
share, discuss, and strategize about innovative methods of
visualization.
Potential topics to explore include:
- Approaches to visualizing assemblage data in spatial contexts
(percentages, mortality profiles, densities, etc.)
- Three-dimensional representations of elements and assemblages insitu
- Graphically representing chronological sequences
- Cautionary tales and critiques from in and outside the discipline
- Reconciling multiple scales and assemblage types
- Overcoming complexity through simplification and its cautionary tales
- Protocols for exploratory spatial analysis
Please forward your email and a potential title by April 30th.
Many sincere cheers,
