Hi
We don't deliver the online testing through our VLE, we do link to it
from our VLE.
There are two reasons for this. One is we have an excellent product that
is web based already which we link to directly from the home page of our
VLE so that people can find it easily. We also pull results through on
to a learners plp inside our vle, so the two work together, but are not
one.
The second reason is as you said, at the point at which they do the
initial assessments the learner will not have an account to log into the
VLE, without an account they can't use the built in quiz style tools. It
also means that if a computer environment is not right for the learner
we can offer a paper version too.

Subject: Re: [VLES] Core Skills Screening Test
Hi All!
Thanks for your replies, both on list and off - I was a bit surprised to
discover that no-one seems to be using their VLE for core skills
screening (with one exception - though it wasn't an extensive
programme). Is there any particular reason for this (e.g. students not
having logons for the VLE at the beginning of their courses)? Quite a
few people were still using paper-based tests, as there weren't
sufficient resources (i.e. PCs) to deliver the test across the campus in
a short space of time. Another reason was that some tests contained
open-ended text questions (that couldn't be automatically marked) to
pick up on potential learning support needs (dyslexia, etc.).
I was wondering if there was any interest in developing a generic online
test for VLEs; the rationale being that it could be more efficient than
a paper-based equivalent (where sufficient PC resources were available)
and students (and staff) would be introduced to assessment tools in the
VLE.
There could be a few versions - standard VLE assessment with automatic
marking (MCQs, etc.), VLE assessment with open-ended text questions
(requiring manual marking), and a survey version that could sit outside
the login space and require students to fill out identification fields
(names, student ID, etc.). The same test could be made available for
different platforms, Moodle, BlackBoard, etc.
As the e-Assessment advisor for the RSC here
<http://www.rsc-ne-scotland.ac.uk/> , I wouldn't mind putting these
together and making them freely available on our site if there was
sufficient interest (i.e. at least one person asks!). If anyone happened
to have a set of existing questions (paper-based, etc.), then I'd be
more than happy to accept contributions!
Thanks for reading...

Hi Kenji,
Here we use BKSB, as Gerard recommended. It does not run through the VLE
but is hosted internally and administered by our IT department. It can
either be run on a server and accessed through a web browser or can be
installed locally on individual PCs.
Let me know if you would like some more info

Subject: [VLES] Core Skills Screening Test
Hi,
I was just wondering if you (or someone you know) use the VLE to deliver
Core Skills (numeracy, communications, ICT) screening tests. The kind of
thing I was imagining was some kind of quiz/survey running through the
VLE - either a commercial package, or something developed in-house.
Thanks,
;-)
