Call For Papers: Teaching Sensitive Topics in the Social Sciences
Whilst to some extent sensitive issues have always been touched on within social science subjects, teaching in these areas have developed radically over the past three decades. This has raised important questions about what it is that we teach, how we teach, about the relationship between teaching and research and about how students respond to the nature of the reality that is being examined.
This call is for papers to address the range of issues that shape choices and directions in teaching sensitive topics. Papers might address specific sensitive areas of teaching, define the boundaries of what we teach, the shifting conceptual and empirical agendas that influence both research and teaching on sensitive topics and some of the challenges that are coming to the fore at the present time and how we can try to respond to them.
We would welcome academic articles, practice papers, reports and material in alternative formats.
Potential contributors are encouraged to contact the editors, Dr Helen Jones ([log in to unmask]) Dr Pam Lowe ([log in to unmask]) to discuss ideas for submission.
Papers could consider, but are not limited to, the following issues:
• The ethics of teaching sensitive subjects
• Student/teacher relationships
• Personal identity and experiences in the classroom
• The impact of globalisation, internationalisation on the multi-ethnic classroom
• Consideration of sensitive topics for example rape, terrorism, racism, sexism, religion etc
Respondents to this call will also be invited to a 'Teaching Sensitive Topics' workshop.
The deadline for submission of papers is: 31st January 2010

RESEARCH WORKER Tackling Debt and Mental Health

Salary: c £26,000 - £28,000
The College Research and Training Unit, a department of the Royal College
of Psychiatrists (www.rcpsych.ac.uk), is a multi-disciplinary team of
research and development workers who research, audit and evaluate mental
health services. We are about to launch a new research study to (a) survey
how UK banks and other creditor organisations currently work with customers
experiencing debt and mental health problems, and (b) develop
tools/recommendations for improving policy and practice. We are now seeking
an experienced and enthusiastic researcher with a post graduate
qualification in social sciences, health sciences, economics or similar
discipline, to lead the data collection, analysis, and report writing
components of the project. The ideal candidate will have quantitative
research and analysis skills. A clear writing style (including reporting of
quantitative data), with the ability to work independently and to deadlines
is essential. Candidates must be IT literate with excellent interpersonal
and communication skills. An interest in, or knowledge of, the relationship
between financial difficulties and health, or financial services or money
advice services would be an advantage. The study is part of the College's
programme of research and intervention on the economic downturn, financial
difficulties and mental health. It is conducted in partnership with the
Money Advice Trust. It is funded by the Friends Provident Foundation.
