Focus on your teaching: revisiting current practice and sharing new ideas
An event for librarians teaching in HE Institutions
Organised by the U C and R East Midlands Section
De Montfort University, Leicester
28 April 10:00 - 16:00
This one-day conference will feature presentations on innovative teaching projects in the morning, followed by a workshop in the afternoon giving participants the opportunity to exchange ideas and think about future practice. Over lunchtime tours will be available of the Eric Wood Learning Zone, a new study environment for De Montfort University students.
Speakers include:
Chris Powis, Deputy Director (Academic Services) at the University of Northampton. Chris is a National Teaching Fellow and Fellow of CILIP and co-author (with Jo Webb) of Teaching Information Skills: theory and practice. His workshop will take a practical look at planning and delivering teaching sessions to what is an increasingly disparate student body
Dr Richard Hall, e-Learning Co-ordinator, De Montfort University, on evaluating the impact of technologies on transitions into HE: recent studies on the student experience in Higher Education highlight that a framework of technologies, including both institutional and non-institutional, read/write web tools, are crucial in connecting students' informal and formal learning. However, there is very little research on how these technologies can be successfully integrated into the student experience upon transition into HE, in order to motivate their independent learning. This workshop will demonstrate the outcomes of a nationally-funded project that is evaluating strategies for enhancing the transition to independent thinking in HE.
There will also be a range of good practice case studies from institutions across the East Midlands.
