Apologies for cross posting

Dear Colleagues,

A number of places are still available on the following cpd25 event:

Senior Library Assistant / Information Services Supervisor conference: Betwixt and Between 2 - responding to new challenges

Tuesday 21 April 2009, Birkbeck College, Malet Street Campus

This conference is aimed at HE Library/Information Services Supervisors in all their guises - a group that often seems to be excluded from mainstream staff development provision. It is designed for delegates who may supervise staff, services or both.

Following on from the success of last year's event, the main objectives of the conference are as follows:

* To provide a rare opportunity for networking

* To advise directly of current and anticipated developments/challenges in the academic library world

* To provide a forum for debate and the sharing of good practice.

Delegates will be able to select one visit and two workshops with time for valuable feedback.

09.30 - 10.00 coffee / tea / Registration

10.00 - 10.20 1st speaker - Mary Nixon - Librarian of Goldsmiths

10.20 - 11.15 Breakout sessions (2 visits and 3 workshops)

11.15 - 11.30 Refreshments

The Library, Institute of Education. The Institute is one of the world's leading centres for education studies and related social sciences, and is a graduate college of the University of London. Birkbeck Library, University of London. This is the Library of Birkbeck College, University of London. In recent years it has been extended and modernised. It provides library and information services to the staff and students of the College. Users include many undergraduates, postgraduates, researchers, certificate students, and distance learners. The diversity of its student body makes Birkbeck a "leading provider of evening higher education".

SOAS Library, University of London. SOAS is the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. Its Library is an international centre for the study of Africa, Asia and the Middle East. It has over 1 million books, many special collections and archives, and a growing number of electronic resources.

Workshops

The workshops will offer the opportunity to discuss a variety of topics

* Reflective practice - what does this entail? Can it improve the services we offer? Can anyone do it? What training is required?

* Information Literacy - why is this important to the library profession? What skills are needed? What new developments and approaches are available

* New ways of learning - a chance to discuss the many and varied ways our new generation of students are learning. What technologies are available and how they can be used.

* Widening participation / diversity - increasing numbers of students are attending HE for the first time. How should staff be prepared to meet their specific needs? What barriers or obstacles may be in their way?

* Team leadership - the difference between leadership and management. What makes a good or bad team leader. Are teams a good thing?

* International - so many different cultures with so many unique outlooks. How can staff be best prepared to meet so many differing needs?
