Dear all,
I want to second Mike Woods' observations. I was still at UBC at the time but in my memory the list itself appeared as an alternative to belonging to what was looking to become a wholly-RGS institution after the merger, as Mike discussed. For a while i think that a number of us saw the Crit Geog Forum as somehow separate from the RGS-IBG megolith. That would be in 1995.
The first conference, at UBC, was the first time i had encountered the International Critical Geography Group as a formal (?) entity and it was after some time as a list member and after i had moved to Bristol in Jan 96. So Lawrence, i would think the forum pre-dates the Group, although this may be because i was over in the colonies....
This 'making history' is interesting as a process, non? Somehow, this story emerges out of the contingent realities we lived. What is interesting about our discussion so far is that it is history of the institution/community/social organism, but most of my recollections are about people.
cheers
rhys
