Reviewing Research
Summary: 	Research reviews may be done as groundwork for new primary
research, as an expression of the current state of knowledge in a field, or
to evaluate ‘what works’ in policy or practice. There are a range of terms
in current use for such projects including literature reviews, narrative
reviews, systematic reviews, meta-analyses and rapid evidence assessment
among others.
Objectives: 	

By the end of the workshop, delegates will be equipped with practical
methods and skills to enable them to undertake a research review that is fit
for their particular purpose, including the resources of time and money
available.
Topics: 	

The course will identify the choices that must be made and the methods that
can be used in research reviewing including

    * defining the purpose and scope of the review,
    * locating existing research,
    * appraising it for its relevance and reliability,
    * summarising and synthesising the findings; and
    * communicating the results.

Who will benefit? 	Researchers who want to develop their skills in reviewing
evidence from existing bodies of research
Learning outcomes:

Course tutor: 	Annette Boaz has recently taken up a new post as lecturer in
translational research at King’s College London. Prior to this she was a
senior research fellow in the UK Centre for Evidence and Policy, also based
at King’s. At the Centre she was involved in a programme of training,
development and methodological work relating to evidence based policy and
practice. Annette has previously worked at the Universities of Oxford and
Warwick, carrying out research in a wide variety of policy areas, completing
evaluations for the UK Cabinet Office and Home Office. Annette has also
worked in the Policy Research Programme at the UK Department of Health.
Annette is a member of the editorial board of the journal Evidence and Policy.
