Chris has spent the last few years working intensively on Feeling Sound,
which is a new approach to audience development. Together with music
psychologists John Sloboda and Jane Ginsborg, and with the help of students
from RNCM and TCM, he has been trying to answer an important question: can
the filtering systems we use to protect ourselves from everyday noise be
consciously adjusted in order to deepen our response to music?
The team have found that they can direct people to attend to physical
qualities of sound, and that this redirecting of attention disrupts the
everyday filtering system. The result, according to many of the students
involved in the research, is a transformation in people’s response to music.
At this event, Vivienne Parry will be interviewing Chris and Jane about
their latest research, inviting the audience to participate in two live
experiments and exploring how the techniques apply to a Haydn String
Quartet, performed live by the Martindale Quartet.
