Applications are welcome from eligible candidates for an AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Award +3 PhD studentship 'Women and Change in the Workplace: Perspectives from the English Midlands 1950s- 1980s' . The studentship is offered in collaboration with the Media Archive for Central England (MACE) and will involve the examination of the extensive ITV regional news collection held by MACE and practical training in the techniques and practices of film archiving. Applications are encouraged from candidates with a background in social history, media and film studies or gender studies. The PhD will use an examination of contemporary visual material to develop an understanding of workplace change in the second half of the 20th century, and is expected to shed light on representations of and changing attitudes towards women's labour force participation and on the impact of legislative change on female employment. It will also address issues relating to the use of this visual material by historians and its integration with other sources that have previously been used more extensively by social historians. The successful applicant will also receive a practical training in film archiving, enabling them to transfer relevant material to digital tape and catalogue it. Alongside the PhD thesis they will develop a programme of film for public exhibition.
