medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
21 December 2008's ODNB 'Life of the Day' was Edmund King's biography of
Henry de Blois (c.1096-1171), bishop of Winchester, the fourth and
youngest son of Etienne, count of Blois, and Adela, daughter of William I.
Professed monk of Cluny, active abbot of Glastonbury, bishop of Winchester,
influential brother of King Stephen, papal legate, defender of church
liberties but despised by St Bernard, pilgrim to Santiago, founder of St
Cross hospital, Winchester, builder and patron.
If anyone would like a copy of the life, please email me before the end of
the week.
