Many if not most Higher Education Media departments now have an element of practical work in their undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. For example, at Bournemouth University over 3000 individual student productions take place each year and for each of these productions Bournemouth is responsible for making sure a Risk Assessment has taken place.
Most institutions operate a paper based system if they operate a system at all! However, the quality of the forms produced by students can be poor as students often don't know the hazards they might encounter or how to mitigate against them through control measures, the tutor 'sign off' process is often inefficient and most importantly student learning isn't often part of the process - just a bureaucratic
paper exercise.
It is for this reason that The Centre for Excellence in Media Practice has developed Parashoot, an online risk assessment system. Parashoot is now being used by a number of higher and further education media departments and one or two major independent production companies and one of the major UK terrestrial broadcasters are also making use of the system.
Parashoot is available for your University or college to use. Please take a look.
