Our group of arts and museums services in the Black Country are looking at
the possibilities of developing a collaborative online resource that:
• Is inspiring and engaging and instils a sense of pride in the creativity of our
region
• Focuses on the rich diversity of fine and decorative art objects in our
combined collections, many of which were manufactured in the region
• Provides a resource for artist/makers and students, in much the same way
as the V&A was set up to support industrial design
• Allows people to interact with collections held by museums and galleries in
the Black Country in new ways
To help us decide how we will move forward with this project we are looking
for an external consultant to help us:
• Review other cultural websites and identify a number of websites that are
felt to be excellent examples of providing online access to cultural collections
• Undertake a focus group with museum staff within the Black Country to
clarify what we can offer through the web and to clarify our potential
audiences
• Undertake 2 focus groups with our identified audiences:
o To find out which websites people currently use
o To discuss which websites deliver the best content and why
o To explore different approaches to providing access to cultural
collections, what people prefer and why
• Review museum website evaluations carried out within the West Midlands
over the last 3 years
• Talk to museum and other sector professionals who have undertaken similar
projects over the last 3 years to help identify issues, opportunities and
threats and to help draw up realistic project budget and timetable
We have a budget for this work of £4000.
