From Margaret Rogers:
Dr Stephen Barbour
FGLS colleagues will be sad to learn that Stephen Barbour passed away on 8
April. As most of you will know, he had been suffering from Parkinson's
Disease for some years, but various complications set in last summer which
he was ultimately unable to resist. Stephen was a founder members of FGLS
and for many years one of the leading scholars in the field of German
sociolinguistics in Britain. His work on language and society in Germany
and on the relation between language, nation and state in the
German-speaking lands gained him an international reputation, but he was
always unassuming and ever ready to discuss and learn. His interest in
language--as well as his dry sense of humour--endured throughout his
illness. He will be very much missed by everyone who knew him.
