The 6th EASP international conference
'Global Economic Crisis and Welfare Restructuring in East and West'

3-4 July 2009
University of Sheffield, UK

Hosted by
East Asian Social Policy research network (EASP)
White Rose East Asian Centre(WREAC)

Plenary Speakers:
Professor Margarita Estevez-Abe (Harvard University , U.S.A.)
Professor Hsiao-Hung Chen (National Cheng-Chi University, Taiwan)
Professor Bob Deacon (University of Sheffield, U.K.)
Professor Jin-Young Moon (Sogang University, Korea)
Professor Kinglun Ngok (Sun Yat-sen University, China)
Professor Alan Walker (University of Sheffield , U.K.)

Conference Theme

East Asian Social Policy research network (EASP) conferences have attempted
to enhance the quality and quantity of research on fast changing East Asian
social policies, and to provide a forum for exchanging ideas for
researchers.

The main theme is 'Global economic crisis and welfare restructuring in East
and West'. East Asian countries and communities currently face (or expect
to face) new social challenges by unprecedented scale of global economic
crisis in decades. The effect of this current crisis could be more
significant in East Asia which already experienced a range of problems in
society along with globalisation and post-industrialisation ever
intensified since Asian financial crisis at the end of the 1990s. This
includes not only problems in conventional social policy areas such as
unemployment, inequality and poverty, family breakdown, and aging society,
but also, possibly, new wave of transformation of society. This conference
will address a range of issues relating to these challenges in East Asia,
identify future research agenda and discuss the role of social policy.

Call for paper and panel proposal

Papers are invited which address the main theme, 'Global economic crisis
and welfare restructuring in East and West' or sub-themes as below. Papers
may examine these issues from divergent perspectives that include
theoretical and empirical angles. Papers may be comparative, or case
studies which have broader implications for East Asian countries and/or for
the development of research methods. Particularly, as the main theme
addresses new emerging challenges, suggestive and prepositional approaches
are encouraged. We also welcome papers by those who are at an early stage
in their career.

We also welcome panel proposals which address the overall theme and/or the
sub-themes. Those wishing to organise a panel should submit a panel
proposal which includes the title and objective of panel (250-300 words),
the details of panel organiser(s) and all participating members, along with
abstracts of three (or four) papers.

Stream 1: Social challenges by the global economic crisis and policy
responses
Stream 2: Income, poverty and social assistance
Stream 3: (In)equality, inclusion and/or exclusion and social development
Stream 4: East Asian welfare regime and relations with other world
Stream 5: Family and childcare
Stream 6: East Asian regional politics and national policy
Stream 7: Ageing, long-term care and pensions
Stream 8: Urban and housing policy
Stream 9: Health and disability across the life-course
Stream 10: Education and social policy

Submission of abstract, panel proposal, full papers, and contributed papers

Those wishing to present in the conference should submit a 250-300 word
abstract or a panel proposal to the EASP ([log in to unmask]) by 17
April 2009. Information enclosed with your abstract should include: title
of paper; your name; institution; and email address.
