Forwarded on behalf of the University of Cape Town Student Worker Alliance:
Dear All,
In line with the demands of the outsourced workers at UCT, The UCT Student Worker Alliance (UCTSWA) has recently launched a petition calling for an end to outsourcing at UCT.
According to its mission statement, UCT claims to "strive towards ending the legacy of apartheid" and "to promote equal opportunity and the full development of human potential". When workers struggle to make ends meet; are intimidated by company management; are not allowed to speak out about their working conditions; are not afforded benefits like medical aid and subsidised tuition fees for their children; and work under pressurised and difficult conditions, this mission statement is, clearly, not being adhered to.
This is an issue of social justice and human rights. Furthermore, UCT is a public institution, which is accountable to us all. Whether you are affiliated to UCT or not, your support is valuable in indicating public anger at the present situation.
Read and sign the petition in support of the worker's demands. You can access it online at www.petitiononline.com/uctswa/petition.html<http://www.petitiononline.com/uctswa/petition.html>.
Please either sign in your personal capacity, or if an organisation wants to endorse this petition, one may do so by listing N/A under NAME and the organisation’s name under ORGANISATION.
Please pass this on to all you know and let us stand together to support the outsourced workers and create a socially just UCT!
Sincerely,
UCTSWA
