Hi there

By way of some background, the symposium is part of a project, the idea for which came out of discussion in a conference session - Geographies of the Academy - from the 2005 London IBG conference, the session being organised by Rob Kitchen and (the late and very much missed) Duncan Fuller.
All the best
Paul.

ESRC funded symposium "Excellence in engagement: policies and practices for university engagement with excluded communities".
22nd June 2009, Centre for Knowledge, Innovation, Technology and Enterprise, Newcastle University, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
The background for the symposium is the recognition of increasing pressures on universities to demonstrate and maximise their societal contributions by engaging with external communities. Although there is a discourse that universities produce many social, cultural, democratic and environmental contributions, much activity and policy has focused on a very narrow - commercially focused - version of 'engagement'.
In this symposium, we want to move beyond this limited version of engagement to sketch out a theoretically-informed practical policy agenda for a broad version of university-community engagement. We will address the practicalities of encouraging engagement with excluded and marginalised groups both within HEIs and for policy-makers.
A survey of universities across the North East, North West and Scotland has highlighted much activity going on across the full range of institutions. From this starting point, we want the symposium to create a space where academics, HE managers and policy-makers can debate and discuss the following questions:
* In an age of the 'overburdened university', how can a university meaningfully adopt an engagement mission?
* How can engagement be made complementary to the other key activities of a university, including teaching and research?
* How can excluded communities hold universities and policy-makers accountable to their interests and needs?
* What indicators and performance measures best capture engagement activity and how can this be best communicated to policy maker communities?
Confirmed speakers for the event include:
* Professor Paul Younger (Pro Vice Chancellor, Newcastle University)
* Professor James Powell (Pro Vice Chancellor, Salford University)
