ESRC CASE Studentship (+3)
School of Geography, University of Nottingham
'Reconfiguring service space in rural communities: bank and building society
branch closures and 'alternative' economic networks'.
Applications are invited to apply for an ESRC CASE Studentship to investigate
the problem of financial exclusion in rural areas, in collaboration with the
Commission for Rural Communities (CRC). The full title of the project
is, 'Reconfiguring service space in rural communities: bank and building society
branch closures and 'alternative' economic networks'. The project will explore
the response of households in rural areas to bank and building society branch
closures as well as the 'alternative' forms of provision that are emerging. The
research is primarily based on qualitative research techniques including
interviewing and participant observation.
The studentship includes payment of fees at the Home/EU rate and an
enhanced maintenance grant or stipend for three years. The total stipend in
year one (2009/10) is £17,290 which consists of the enhanced ESRC stipend
plus the £2,000 'top-up' from the project partner. This compares to £13,290
for a regular ESRC studentship. The successful candidate must have (or be in
the process of completing) an ESRC-recognised Masters or demonstrate
equivalent experience relevant to the area of research (in this case additional
training during the first year PhD will normally be required).
The PhD will be supervised within the School of Geography by Dr Sarah Hall
and Professor Andrew Leyshon, and by Dr David Land at the CRC. Informal
enquiries and initial expressions of interest should be directed to either Sarah
Hall ([log in to unmask]) or Andrew Leyshon
([log in to unmask]).
