Job Title: Mathematical Model
Job Reference: 919-CFI-MK-1334290

Job Title: Mathematical Modeller

Employer, Health Protection Agency,

Department: Statistics, Modelling and Bioinformatics

Location: Colindale

Salary: 48,514-58,970 pa

Job Type: Permanent

Closing Date: 28/04/2009

Interview Date: 15/05/2009

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) is an independent body that protects the health and well-being of everyone in England and Wales. The Agency plays a critical role in protecting people from infectious diseases and in preventing harm when hazards involving chemicals, poisons or radiation occur. We also prepare for new and emerging threats, such as a bio-terrorist attack or a virulent new strain of pathogen.

We are looking for a mathematical modeller to lead the development and application of mathematical models of infection transmission within the Modelling and Economics Unit, specifically within the area of vaccine preventable diseases. The post holder is expected to work collaboratively with epidemiologists and microbiologists in the HPA and outside, and with modellers at academic institutions, to build the appropriate theoretical framework for optimising decisions on national disease control policy and surveillance infrastructure. They are also required to identify and secure the grant funding necessary to increase the capacity for mathematical modelling at CfI.

The post-holder will be based in the Modelling and Economics Unit at the Centre for Infections in Colindale, which is a dynamic and stimulating group comprising infectious disease modellers and health economists working on diverse projects relating to the burden of infectious disease and modelling the impact of interventions against infections. He/she should have a postgraduate degree in a relevant discipline, extensive postgraduate experience, and experience of computer programming and mathematical modelling of communicable disease transmission. Applicants should have an internationally-recognized track record of research and have experience of supervising scientific staff. They must have good inter-personal skills and be able to communicate clearly and succinctly with a non-technical audience, collaborate across scientific disciplines, work with initiative and independence, work as a team leader/member, and maintain required levels of confidentiality.

The Centre for Infections at Colindale, NW London is an internationally renowned centre of excellence for expertise, reference and research, surveillance and epidemiology in relation to micro-organisms that affect human health. The modern purpose built centre is well equipped and staffed and provides excellent Library, Occupational Health and Refectory facilities. There is also a Nursery and Gym on Site.

PLEASE NOTE: Shortlisting details and interview arrangements will be communicated via email therefore please ensure you check your Emails/NHS jobs accounts regularly following the closing date.
