Sue, are you quoting from my "Principles of Conformation" books? Because
if you're not, then I'd probably kind of like to know whose book you are
referring to, because whoever they are, they must have come to the same
conclusions that I came to as the result of research that I performed
while I was in graduate school, and later.
If you're not clear on how the skeleton, and skeletal proportions,
influence how easy a horse may find it to execute various different
athletic activities, then please do give the Prin. Conf. books a look,
because in them I go into this subject in considerable detail.
Besides, I suggest that you have a peep at the classic works that deal
with conformation. They are those by Horace Hayes (ca. 1913), Gustav Rau
("Judging the Warmblood horse", ca. 1933), and Gobaux and Barrier ("The
Exterior of the Horse", 1892).
If you need an English translation of Rau, I can supply one that I and a
friend made a number of years ago. Gobaux and Barrier was originally in
French, but the English translation is excellent and not difficult to
obtain -- runs about a hundred clams.
Please let me know if you have further questions or needs in this area;
it's one of my favorites. -- Sincerely, Deb Bennett, Ph.D., Director,
Equine Studies Institute
