James Henderson was Managing Director of the English Natural Ice Company who collected ice on Dozmary Pool and Sourton Tor on Dartmoor, in about 1880, with the intention of supplying the west-country's fishing ports with ice. He also was patentee on some of the machinery used at the site to compress snow and ice into blocks.
See: Harris, H 1988 'The Sourton Tor Iceworks, North-west Dartmoor' Rep Trans Devonshire Ass, 120, 177-200.
I assume also that this is the same James Henderson who was responsible for surveying many fine maps of mines in Cornwall and Devon. He was also founder of the school of mining and metallurgy in Truro.

Phil

Subject: James Henderson
I have been in contact with a direct descendant of James Henderson (who presented the paper on Cornish ore dressing to the Institute of Civil Engineers in 1858, and is responsible for the very fine drawings of tin, copper and arsenic dressing techniques which are well known to many of us). He is now trying to piece together the movements of James after his return from Australia in the 1850s. He may have been involved in copper ventures elsewhere in the UK. I wonder if any members of the list have any knowledge or references?
Many thanks.
Lynne
