Speaker: Jason Durk, National Rail Enquiries
Everyone grumbles about inadequate information on fares and delays, yet few
of us understand the issues involved in communicating transport-related
information.
The National Rail Enquiries service was established in June 1996, following
BR's privatisation. It replaced around 60 smaller telephone enquiry bureaux
to provide train times, fares, and service disruption information on behalf
of the Train Operating Companies.
Despite heavy investment in technology, rail travel information is far from
perfect. Only recently has research begun into information users' wants and
needs and the training of staff as information advisors.
Jason will discuss the issues involved in providing rail passenger
information and explain not only why so many communication problems arise,
but also how the challenges can be met so that everyone can experience
timely, accurate, relevant and consistent information.
