Just to note really the key to a successful VLE implementation, use and embedding, is often more down to the culture and staff in your college than the technology used.
I have seen colleges have great success with Moodle, Blackboard and even Virtual Campus...
I have also seen colleges have little success with Moodle, Blackboard and Virtual Campus...
It doesn't mean that the VLE used is unimportant, just that other things often need to be sorted first.
Bournemouth and Poole use DigitalBrain and are a Becta Exemplar College in the use of ILT.
In my opinion the focus always needs to be on the needs of the learners and their learning.
Is the reason your current VLE not working for you actually down to the software or are there other reasons?
Experience from this list shows that changing a VLE can often stimulate use of the VLE as it is *new* and *shiny*, equally though the "reasons" that were there before may simply be replaced with new "reasons".
It's too simplistic suddenly becomes it's too complex.
How to embed a VLE? Sounds like the perfect topic for discussion at the ILT Champions Conference on the 21st April.

James Clay
PS Go for a hosted and supported Moodle solution, in my opinion. Hearing lots on the grapevine of Universities now moving from Blackboard to Moodle...

Subject: [VLES] FE College VLE - Which to choose?
Hello all,
I work at an FE college and am the VLE/ILT Specialist. We are currently
using DigitalBrain as our VLE, but it really isn't suitable as it's designed
primarily for secondary and primary schools.
We have only had it a year and we are seriously considering changing it
because it just doesn't do what we need it to.
I was wondering what VLEs other FE colleges use, why, and what experiences
people have had with them? The main issue is that although I run the
college's VLE, it is me and only me who does so, and I don't have a lot of
in depth knowledge of programming such as mySQL, php etc so would probably
find it difficult to run something like Moodle. On Google i've found that
most college's seem to be using Moodle, and I have been asked to investigate
that as well as Blackboard.
What would people suggest and why?
Thanks
Asher Francis
