Applications are invited for one fully funded three-year PhD studentship within
the Transport Research Institute Taxi Studies Group. The studentship will
cover tuition fees to home/EU level, and will provide a standard living
allowance (stipend), currently £12,940 per annum for 2008/09. Overseas
students are eligible to apply, but will be liable to pay the difference between
home/EU and overseas fees. Note that fees are subject to change annually
throughout programme of study.
The studentship is expected to start as soon as possible.
The studentship will apply to the study of taxi supply at key points of demand.
The taxi is an instantly recognizable form of transport the world over. Yet
despite the common appearance and consistency in use the mode of transport
has received less attention than some other forms of mainstream transport.
This studentship provides a unique opportunity to investigate the use of taxis,
particularly in use of taxis at taxi stances.
The project will be undertaken under the auspices of the Taxi Studies Group,
and will include the opportunity for direct input to the activities of the group.
Applicants should be prepared to spend periods of time away from Edinburgh,
and there may be a possibility of an overseas placement period as part of the
research.
Applicants must be highly motivated and must normally hold at least a first or
second class honours degree, or equivalent. Candidates whose first language
is not English must meet the University's English language requirements.
Applications from individuals having experience in transport provision or
transportation analysis would be particularly welcome.
