Dear Jerome,
SPM stores the SPM.mat files in '-v6' explicitly. You may want to
change this and it should not impact SPM behaviour. However, this is
hardcoded in several places throughout the code. The easiest way to
find them all is to grep through all .m files for "save" commands.
