Re Abigail Archer's message below: hey folks, ignore Abi's modesty: she isn't a PhD student, but has had her Masters for a long time and has since then being earning her living by doing masses of really interesting and varied research! It would be brilliant if you can include her. Everyone who's ever worked with her knows what an asset she is.
As for me, I'd have jumped at this, but a mixed bag of family responsibilities would preclude any travel in the near future.
Best
Jude

What about even earlier career researchers like me - or is that pushing it too far?
Regardless, sounds like a great programme!

Hello all,
Wow! Wish I was finished with the PhD sooner and could join, this sounds
really great.

Subject: Research bid: PV-LIVE
I've been working with a group of PhD students (Elena Vacchelli, Alison
Buckler and Jude English) at the OU to prepare a bid for the ESRC early
career researchers training and networking fund. We intend to submit it
next week and if successful will mean we've got something tangible to
follow on from the training events funded by the NCRM.
We'd like to take a group of 10-15 early career researchers (UK-based
PhD students or working academics no more than 5 years beyond completing
their PhD) to Hungary and Ireland for a week each to work on community
development projects with contacts we have there, using PV. There will
also be a training weekend in the UK, an orientation day for people
interested in taking part and a final public events reporting on the
results.
One of the aims is to extend and strengthen the PV-NET network by
putting on some tangible activities, and to create the opportunity to
build up a European dimension to what the network does. We intend to
recruit participants from PV-NET as well as trying to draw in some new
blood (and embed them in the existing network). We're working on the
costings at the moment, but there will be fully funded places, and no
fees beyond travel and subsistence.
Having the PV-NET statement, even as a draft has worked well - it gave
us something to talk about in the main narrative, as well as key parts
of the form like the research ethics section. I'll circulate the full
bid when it's more polished and ready to submit next week. For the
meantime, I append a top-level description of what we're trying to
achieve.
Chris

PV-LIVE - Building capacity for managing participatory video research
projects through international field experience
PV-LIVE will deliver a number of the ESRC scheme's objectives ,while
also responding to a well-evidenced need for increased capacity for the
use of participatory video (PV) in research amongst the UK social
science community. It will build upon an existing network and create an
opportunity for early career researchers to gain experience in planning
and managing participatory video projects in Europe.
The project will comprise a series of linked training and networking
events, and two field experiences in Europe. During the fieldwork, PV
will be used as tool for facilitating social learning among community
members in small-scale projects negotiated with local host
organisations.
The overall project is designed to provide a rich source of learning and
provide participants with good contacts and strong working relationships
with European researchers and community development practitioners. The
intention is to give early career researchers exposure to the full range
of issues in managing a research project, in addition to a thorough
grounding in specific methodological issues.
The project responds to a clearly evidence need for capacity building,
training and networking by building on a well-grounded set of
relationships and opportunities. It has the following aims:
A) To provide a training opportunity for early career researchers
with an interest in using participatory video, in order to build
capacity for the use of the methodology in research.
B) To provide a short term, flexible opportunity for international
mobility for early career researchers, in order to foster enthusiasm for
further international networking with academics and practitioners who
use participatory video for social learning.
C) To enable a group of early career researchers to take
responsibility for delivering a series of events and international field
experiences, in order to develop their research management skills.
