medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
From: John Wickstrom <[log in to unmask]>
> John has begun to use some quite technical terms in his admirable calendar
posts, one of which, not knowing the definition, has tempted my imagination:
"megalomartyr". I can imagine a heroic death preceded by many futile attempts
to dispatch the subject, and perhaps amazing posthumous miracles.
alas, no.
a Megalomartyr is simply a fellow who dreams incessantly of an heroic death
preceded by many futile attempts to be dispatched and of performing amazing
posthumous miracles.
but, in the end, just dies peacefully in his own bed, at an advanced age,
surrounded by friends and family, including multiple grandchildren.
the only "martrydom" involved is the fact that his shrewish wife, of many
decades, survived him.
