Welsh Medium Postgraduate Scholarship

Arts and Humanities
The School of Creative Studies and Media and School of Welsh, both
constituent members of Bangor University's College of Arts and
Humanities, are offering in conjunction a Welsh medium postgraduate
scholarship in Drama and Scriptwriting, funded under the Welsh Medium
National Development Scheme, to commence on 1st October 2009. Funding
is available for up to five years, including three or four years as a
doctoral research student and an additional year as a teaching fellow.
The postgraduate scholarship will cover the cost of university tuition
fees (the Home/EU rate in 2008-09 is £3300 per year) and will provide
a maintenance grant (£12,940 per year in 2008-09). Applications are
invited from potential researchers in one of the following fields:
scriptwriting/screenwriting/writing for mediums such as television,
radio and stage; drama/theatre studies (academic and practical). The
option of practice-led research is also one that could be considered.
The successful candidate will also be required to undertake some Welsh
medium teaching for the Schools as a condition of the award. The final
year of the scholarship is regarded as a fellowship year when teaching
commitments will increase.

The School of Creative Studies and Media is home to over ten full-time
academic members of staff who teach and research in areas ranging from
Drama and Theatre Studies to Journalism and New Media. The School of
Welsh contains five full-time academic members of staff who teach and
research in areas ranging from Early Welsh Poetry to Creative Writing
and from Medieval Prose to American-Welsh Literature. More information

The successful applicant will:
Have achieved at an upper second-class or first class honours degree
or a postgraduate qualification in a relevant field. To be eligible
for the award, the individual must be a graduate of a recognised
institution of higher education, or an undergraduate expecting to
graduate before 31 July 2009.
Be a fluent Welsh speaker and writer.
Demonstrate the capability and diligence required to complete a PhD by
research within the period of the award.
Prepare an outline of his ideas for the proposed research project.
Be in a position to undertake Welsh medium teaching duties for the
School from the second year onwards. The holder will be expected to
make an important contribution towards Welsh medium teaching and the
development of new Welsh medium provision.
