My thanks to those who responded to my request for information from those who sold headphones to students.
To recap the benefits to this Library would be:
*No cleaning
*No repair
*No late return
*No after hours return - despite being told desk will be closed - no staff - must be back by then. (We have external security staff on duty after the service point closes and do not want to place tham in an awkward situation).
*End of disputes
*Less hassle for the staff (in issuing and discharging)
* If we were able to supply via a vending machine - 24/7 access while stocks last
Of those who replied one used a vending machine (and have since discovered - by use of a Google search) others also use a Vending machine and sell alongside IT consumables.
The prices varied: £1, £1.20, £1.40 and in one case £6 (stereo)
One sold both headphones and earphones.
It seems in most cases students were happy to pay only one indicated initial unhappiness which has now settled down.
One combined both, lending and selling. But when lending retained student card.
Most went over to selling because of disputes and / or did not like the thought of multple use.
24/7 also brought up the spectre of considering to sell rather than lend.
Leakage of sound may continue to be an issue and staff ask students to turn the sound down if it is very noticeable - but the same is true for those who bring in their own headphones, or are listening to their ipods.
Once again my thanks to those who replied.
Regards
Enid
