Bib level holds used here at City. Generally works well, aside from the issue mentioned earlier about occasional item level holds (usually staff intervention) interfering with the smooth running on it.

Subject: Bib and item-based holds
Hi,
We're reviewing our lending policies and its been suggested that we
move to using bib-based rather than item-based holds. This would mean
that the reserver gets the copy returned soonest rather than whichever
copy they've clicked on in the OPAC. However concerns have been raised
that this might cause confusion and delays.
As a quick straw poll, I'd be interested in knowing who in the UK uses
which type of holds. Especially useful would be if anybody has switched
from one type to the other, and if so why?
Thanks,
Ian
