Measuring Up - the Evolution of Impact Metrics

New metrics characterising different facets of scholarly communication are
emerging at an ever increasing rate. Analysis which was once only possible
by a select few groups of specialists is now considered a routine exercise,
and undertaken by publishers, funding agencies, libraries, consultants, even
national governments.
This seminar will explore the evolution of Impact Metrics, examining
strengths and weaknesses and the implications in a society increasingly
focussed on measuring research quality. Moving forward from the Impact
Factor, it will cover usage (download) measurements from the MESUR project;
author level indices such as the Hirsch index and derivatives; and
eigenvector (PageRank) style metrics such as the EigenFactor and the SCImago
Journal Rank Indicator.
In addition, the seminar will address the fundamental nature of, and
motivations driving, knowledge exchange and technology transfer; will
present research from the group responsible for the bibliometrics behind
HEFCE's Research Excellence Framework (REF) pilot; and will conclude with a
consideration of what future metrics might look like, particularly in those
areas not currently well served by existing ones.

librarians, and any academic due to be evaluated in the post RAE 2008
environment.

Scholarly publishers can often be so concentrated on their own industry that
they don't look over the parapet to see what others are doing. ALPSP has
brought together experts to show what is being done beyond the scholarly
publishing horizon. They come from computer games, the online radio
industry, consumer and specialist magazines, general fiction publishing and
content providers for mobile devices. They demonstrate what is being
achieved in other niche markets in these difficult economic times.
Learn how user-generated content has transformed the games space. Consider
why magazines are switching their investment to online communities to
promote and support their traditional publishing brands. See how general
fiction publishers are using social networking to attract new readers. Find
out how content is being adapted for delivery on to mobile devices.
On a more serious note, consider how scholarly publishing must learn from
the best of the rest to stay viable in an increasingly digital future.
