Last night my automatic metadata refresh using 'metadatatool' from the 1.3
IdP failed, reporting
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.OutOfMemoryError
and leaving me with an empty ukfederation-metadata.xml file. Fortunately
the IdP is clever enough to ignore this new file and to continue to use
a cached copy of the old one. However I suspect that bad things will
happen if the IdP is restarted.
I suspect that the UK federation metadata has just grown to the point
where the default Java memory allocation is insufficient to process it.
For the Sun Java I'm using, adding '-Xmx128m' directly after '$JAVACMD' on
the last line of the metadatatool script should have doubled the memory
allocation and seems to have fixed the problem, at least for now.
I suspect that a number of IdPs in the UK may have this problem this
