Analysis of seismograms to determine
the rupturing details for the 2007
Mw 8.5 Sumatra earthquake and its relation
to other geophysical information along
the Sumatra arc (NERC tied studentship)
Dr. D.P.Robinson & Prof. S. Das
The goal of this project is to use broad band digitally
recorded teleseismic body and mantle waves to determine
the details of the rupture process of this
great earthquake, the third great one along the Sumatra arc
since December 2004, using the inversion method
developed by Das & Kostrov. The relationship
of the slip to the aftershocks will be examined.
The second part of the project will
consist of comparing the solution for this
and other the other great earthquakes along this
arc, with available GPS and other geophysical
data, the latter collected from two cruises to the area.
If time permits, the feasibility of including
other geophysical data (such as InSAR) into the
inversion method, will be considered.
The results will be interpreted in geophysical
terms and will increase our understanding of
the subduction processes in the region, as well
as shedding light on such processes worldwide.
The project is tied to a £2m NERC Consortium
grant to study the 2004 and 2005 great Sumatra
earthquakes.
