As Business Educators we are well placed to look at the organisational
and management aspects of this important question. It's about
risk-taking and failure. Educational managers are, for a range of
reasons some better than others, terrified of failure. They communicate
this to staff and students. Failure is to be avoided at all costs. This
leads to risk-averse behaviours by teachers and by students, and this
makes independent learning very difficult - so it won't happen to any
significant extent, although lots of activities labelled 'independent
learning' will be observable via classroom inspections. Just like AfL we
will observe the letter but not the spirit of whatever directives emerge
on this theme.
