the government believes that it will improve the health of the economy, the
parents believe that it will improve the prospects of their children, and the
children? .... well, it represents a different set of hurdles to negotiate before
crossing the same finishing line – love or hate it, independent learning is the
latest fashion accessory in education ... with a longer life expectancy than
the mini-skirt and the mullet, i fear ...
but what about the practical impact upon teachers’ and schools’ performance?
some students may be unwilling and/or unable to assume the increased
responsibility for their own education – and the sight of struggling learners [as
well as struggling league table positions] may well drive the teacher-facilitator
back into the role of instructor
can independent learning ever make that huge leap, from drawing board to
classroom? or will the human factor, combined with the assessment-driven
environment, result in a best-case scenario of one foot in each camp?
what do you think?
