REPORTS TO: Senior Biostatistician, Clinical Research Support Centre
RESPONSIBLE TO: Director of the Clinical Research Support Centre
MAIN PURPOSE:
To provide statistical expertise to the Clinical Research Support
Centre team to ensure that the Centre can advise on and conduct high
quality clinical research in partnership with researchers in Northern
Ireland, UK, Ireland and elsewhere.
JOB SUMMARY:
This is a permanent full-time post in the Clinical Research Support
Centre in Belfast. The Centre has provisional registration as a UK
Clinical Trials Unit, and the only such unit in Northern Ireland. As
such it provides the full range of support for research by the
National Health Social Care Service in the whole of Northern Ireland,
but it is also involved in research projects based throughout the
United Kingdom and beyond. It is also in partnership with the All
Ireland Cooperative Oncology Research Group based in Dublin, which is
involved in both national and international cancer studies. The wide
range of disciplines, disease areas, and types of studies provide the
Centre’s statisticians with good opportunities to develop their skills
and interests in particular areas. There is scope for the Centre’s
statisticians to develop their knowledge and skills in a variety of
statistical methodologies and they are encouraged to attend relevant
courses and conferences. The Centre also has a remit to provide
training, and the statisticians facilitate workshops in statistical
methods for health and social care research workers. The statistical
computer programs used in the Centre are SPSS, Stata, and R.
Main Duties/Responsibilities
1. To assist the Senior Biostatistician in the further development of
statistical services within the CRSC.
2. To assist the Senior Biostatistician in the development of
appropriate policy and procedures for all activities in keeping with
current GCP standards and other relevant regulations.
3. To assist the Senior Biostatistician in providing guidance and
ensuring the conduct and further development of junior staff through
training, mentoring, and staff review as appropriate.
4. To engage in the development of a broadly based CRSC portfolio of
clinical research protocols from research concept through design and
conduct, to analysis and reporting as required.
5. To use a variety of Statistical software packages and general
office systems
6. To adhere to all relevant standard operating procedures
7. To develop and maintain efficient communications with members of
clinical research team.
8. To supervise and liaise with other CRSC staff in the specification,
management, quality control, entry and analysis of data and archiving,
as required by investigators and sponsors.
9. Write and submit progress reports to Funders, Study oversight
committees and Sponsors
10. Plan workloads over a range of activities and when appropriate
amend these plans in line with changing priority requirements of
Sponsors, Regulatory Authorities or study teams.
11. To contribute to the development of appropriate training
programmes for investigators in the design and conduct of clinical
research.
12. To disseminate knowledge of the CRSC among investigators and
sponsors of clinical research, by means of the website and other
appropriate channels.
13. The post holder will be encouraged to develop his/her own research
portfolio, including making a contribution to the development of
clinical research methodology.
14. The post holder will be expected to maintain and develop their
knowledge and skills in their area of expertise through continuing
professional development activities.
15. Other administrative duties may be assigned from time to time by
the Senior Biostatistician.
