The Medical Statistics Team at the University of Aberdeen is pleased to announce the dates of three forthcoming courses: Introduction to SPSS, Introductory Medical Statistics and Intermediate Medical Statistics. Application forms are available from Marie Walker-Greenwood, Population Health, Foresterhill ([log in to unmask], Tel 01224 552479). These three courses will now run just once a year. Please note that course numbers are limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis.
1. Introduction to SPSS - 5 May between 9.15am and 1.00pm - £75 (incl refreshments)
The course is aimed at clinical and non-clinical researchers and other health care professionals who would like a basic introduction to SPSS. The course will take place in Computer room CR2, Basement of the Medical School Library, Polwarth Building, Medical School, Foresterhill, University of Aberdeen.
This course offers a practical guide to using SPSS for Windows. Topics covered by this course include:
* data entry
* exploring and summarising data
* manipulating data
* data transformations
* data checking
Format of the course: There will be short demonstrations followed by opportunities to work your way through the course handbook at your own pace. Please note that this is not a course on statistics.

2. Introductory Medical Statistics - 18 May between 9.15am and 5pm - £150 (incl lunch)
The course is aimed at individuals who are required to interpret and/or conduct basic statistical analyses and would be relevant to clinical and non-clinical researchers and other health care professionals. The course will take place in the Seminar Room, Environmental & Occupational Medicine, Liberty Safe Work Research Centre, Foresterhill Road, Foresterhill, University of Aberdeen.
Topics include:
* Issues of study design
* Types of data
* Descriptive statistics
* Probability and distributions
* P-values and hypothesis testing
* Confidence intervals
* Univariate techniques (t-tests, correlation, chi-square tests)
Format of the course: A series of lectures aimed at practical application rather than theoretical formulae. No previous knowledge is assumed.

3. Intermediate Medical Statistics - 25-26 May between 9.15 and 5pm - £250 (incl lunch)
The aim of this 2 day course is to introduce participants to more advanced statistical techniques. The course would be relevant to clinical and non-clinical researchers and other health care professionals. The course will take place in the Polwarth Building, Medical School, Foresterhill, University of Aberdeen. The venues will be Room 3.052 (mornings) and Computing room CR2, Basement of the Medical School Library (afternoons).
Topics include:
* Analysis of variance
* Linear regression
* Odds ratios and relative risks
* Logistic regression
The format of the course is a series of lectures, followed by SPSS computer practicals. This will enable participants to gain experience of the theory and practical application of the statistical techniques, as well as interpretation of the accompanying SPSS output.
A basic knowledge of statistics including p-values, hypothesis testing and simple statistical concepts is assumed. Prior experience of a statistics package or spreadsheet is desirable, but not essential.
