Scottish Environment Protection Agency
Senior Data Analyst/Modeller – Diffuse Pollution
Ref: ES0171
Starting Salary £30,170
Stirling or Edinburgh
The Environmental Assessment Unit exists to provide expertise in the
application of environmental data analysis, modelling, GIS and statistical
techniques. The team within the unit provide expertise in one or more of these
areas and work collaboratively to provide an overall service to the organisation
using a range of specialised software packages and bespoke applications to
meet business needs.
In this post you will support SEPA’s activities in relation to the scientific
understanding, regulation and control of diffuse pollution pressures and
impacts on the Scottish environment. More specifically, you will bring and use
advanced data analysis and modelling skills to understand these pressures and
impacts and how they might best be mitigated. Modelling of diffuse pollution
requires a good understanding of the physical processes and pathways by
which pollutants are delivered to receiving waters and also requires key skills
such as advanced GIS modelling techniques, use of catchment models and
advanced data analysis and programming software.
As the unit uses ESRI’s ARCGIS suite of GIS products and SEPA’s corporate
spatial data holdings are all held in ArcSDE on an ORACLE database, knowledge
of these tools and SQL is essential. You will also need to use SEPA’s corporate
data analysis software SPlus in order to extract and analyse, manipulate and
graphically explore datasets as well as undertake statistical analysis.
Computer programming experience and knowledge of environmental statistics
would be a distinct advantage. An aptitude to learning and developing new
data analysis tools and techniques is essential. A key part of this post will be
to work effectively with other modellers in the unit to develop and apply
catchment models and undertake source apportionment and options appraisal
studies in support of Water Framework Directive River Basin Management
Planning activities.
The closing date is 20th February 2009.
Successful applicants will be asked to provide a Basic Disclosure Scotland
