Vancouver Island University is pleased to host the 2009 Child and the Book International Graduate Student Conference here in Nanaimo from May 1-3, 2009. Our keynotes are Perry Nodelman and Mavis Reimer, acclaimed Canadian scholars and writers in Children's Literature. The website is www.viu.ca/childandbook . The theme of the conference is "This Land is Our Land." Early bird registration closes Feb. 28, 2009 after which registration costs rise. Registration can be done online.
Graduate and post-graduate students from around the world will present their research and papers on various aspects of children's literature and also talk about specific books and authors. The papers cover a wide range of topics from pedagogy (reading, perception of literature, and teaching), to specific issues such as politics or national identity formation in children's literature, and also cover literature appropriate to a wide range of ages.
The basic early bird conference cost is $75; there are optional additional cost items such as the conference dinner and an "An Afternoon With Emily," during which those attending will meet "Emily Carr" who will read poetry and give an art lesson.
