Hi All.
We're seeking someone for the following (IMHO interesting) position up
here at sunny St Andrews. Please distribute to anybody you think might
be interested.
------------
Programmer/Software-developer
Salary - £29,704 - £32,458 pa
The Centre for Research into Ecological and Environmental Modelling
(CREEM) is an inter-disciplinary research centre at the University of St
Andrews, linking researchers from the Schools of Mathematics and
Statistics, Biology and Geography and Geosciences. CREEM’s remit is to
develop and apply advanced mathematical and statistical methods to
practical problems in biology, ecology and geography.
We are seeking a motivated programmer to join an established team of
researchers in an ambitious research project investigating methods to
mitigate the effects of man-made marine noise on marine mammals. You
will be located in CREEM and work with scientists from CREEM and the Sea
Mammal Research Unit (SMRU), both of which are internationally renowned
research groups.
The Project
There is currently great concern about the impacts of man-made noise in
the oceans on marine fauna. Researchers at St Andrews, and commercial
partners, have spent several years developing tools for mitigating the
effect of marine operations that produce underwater sound e.g. sonar,
seismic surveying, construction. To this end, extensive databases as
well as research and commercial software that collectively quantify risk
have been developed.
We require a programmer to help extend and improve these tools. The post
is for one year in the first instance. It involves:
liaising with researchers to produce reliable, efficient
implementations of new analysis methods
working with our commercial collaborator’s programming team to link
the respective software components
providing input to various design reviews as required by
project-funders/end-users
improving the project team’s analysis tools in terms of efficiency and
quality assurance.
You should have good degree-level qualifications, experience in
producing code of a quality suitable for inclusion in a commercial
software package and skill in a low to middle-level programming
language, such as variants of C.
The post will start on 1 May 2009, or as soon as possible thereafter.
