The Health Protection Agency (HPA) is an independent body that protects the health and well-being of everyone in England and Wales. The Agency plays a critical role in protecting people from infectious diseases and in preventing harm when hazards involving chemicals, poisons or radiation occur. We also prepare for new and emerging threats, such as a bio-terrorist attack or a virulent new strain of pathogen.
Applications are invited for a PhD studentship in the mathematical modelling of infectious diseases, tenable from February 2009 and funded by the European Union. The project will involve the application and development of innovative modelling and statistical techniques to study the transmission of major and emerging hospital pathogens and evaluating options for their control. Candidates must be UK/EU citizens.
The successful candidate will work within a major European research network for combating the spread of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria in hospitals (www.mosar-sic.org) which brings together internationally recognized experts in basic laboratory sciences, hospital epidemiology, clinical medicine, behavioural sciences, quantitative analysis and modelling, and health economics.
The studentship will be based in the Statistics, Modelling and Bioinformatics Department, Centre for Infections in the Health Protection Agency (HPA) in North London and jointly supervised by the School of Mathematical Sciences, University of Nottingham.
Applicants should possess a bachelors degree (2i or above) in mathematics, statistics, science or other discipline with a strong analytical component, and ideally have some exposure to mathematical biology or mathematical modelling of infectious diseases. Experience of computer programming is highly desirable. The studentship will cover EU tuition fees, together with a stipend of £15,100-16,400 for three years.
The Centre for Infections at Colindale, NW London is an internationally renowned centre of excellence for expertise, reference and research, surveillance and epidemiology in relation to micro-organisms that affect human health.
