The University of Westminster is offering a number of full-time research studentships commencing in October 2009. Tuition fees and an annual stipend of £15,000 will be provided. Within the School of Architecture and the Built Environment, applications for the following subjects in the fields of transport and logistics are invited:
'Sustainable Logistics and Urban Form'. Research into the connections between urban form and travel behaviour has developed extensively in recent years, but relatively little of this has been applied in the area of urban freight. Building on existing work in this sector at the University of Westminster, this study will examine the relationship between urban form and freight transport operations, especially 'sustainable logistics'. (project code SABE5). For an informal discussion of this topic please contact Prof Michael Browne at [log in to unmask]
'Addressing Climate Change and Devolution in the UK: reconciling the irreconcilable in Transport and Planning?' Achievement of greenhouse emission reductions, to which the UK has committed itself at national level (with targets for 2020 and 2050), raises questions about the application of such targets in each region of the UK, within some of which greater emphasis is currently placed on regional economic development for example. This study will examine the applications of such goals at local and regional scales, and implications for governance. (project code SABE6). For an informal discussion of this topic please contact Prof Austin Smyth at [log in to unmask]
'Analysis of the Public Transport Market using Smartcard Data'. The use of smartcards in public transport is growing rapidly. Building on earlier work at the University, this study will examine scope for making greater use of data collected through such systems, for management and planning purposes in public transport, and its relationship with more traditional forms of data collection. Supervision will be provided jointly with the University's School of Informatics. (project code SABE7). For an informal discussion of this topic please contact Prof Peter White at [log in to unmask]
